ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome)

It is a syndrome which is contracted by approximately 160,000 people in North America and Canada . Sadly it continues to end the lives of about 50% of those affected.

The onset is swift and totally debilitating, placing the victim on life support to face a constant stream of crisis events until they become either stabilized or succumb to the syndrome. The survival statistics for this condition are not good, although they are improving each and every year as treatment protocols are upgraded as ARDS becomes better understood. The ARDS patient is unable to advocate for themselves and relies totally on their support system to liaise with the medical team on their behalf. This of course underlines the great need for everyone to have a Power of Attorney completed in respect of their medical care.

The best source of information for those providing support of an ARDS victim can be found at The ARDS Foundation and a direct link to that site is provided by the OETSG on our links section.

The ARDS Foundation which is based in Chicago, USA , with a Canadian Chapter, is staffed by volunteers who have suffered personally through ARDS by being either a victim themselves, or having had someone close to them face this trauma. The ARDS Foundation is dedicated to increasing ARDS awareness worldwide as well as promoting and encouraging studies which will provide greater understanding and future cure. The Foundation has physicians on its board of management who dedicate themselves to the treatment of pulmonary disorders. This connection helps the Foundation to keep abreast of new developments in the understanding and treatment of ARDS.
